Allotments
Norwell Parish Gardens, also known as Norwell Allotments, are located at the Bathley / Caunton end of the village across from the Plough pub. Records of Parochial Ownership have been traced back as far as 1855. At that time, many farm workers would have had very little land or gardens attached to their tied cottage. The Parish Gardens would therefore be available to farm labourers so they could grow food to feed their families.
Originally, an allotment size of 302sq yards (250sq.metres) was considered a suitable size to feed a family of 4 for the whole year. Nowadays, of course, this area would be far more that most people would want so the policy in Norwell is governed by what the potential allotment holder thinks they want and can manage.
If you have children with you they might like to find all the common vegetables which are grown as well as less commonly grown ones such as Asparagus, Artichokes, Aubergines and Peppers.
